As tax season comes to a close at the end of April, we at RHN are proud as always of our team for their dedication to our many personal and corporate tax clients who rely on us for a stress-free filing year after year.

We’re also proud of ourselves, as a firm, for refusing to choose between top-tier client service and the wellbeing of our team. This year, as always, our mandatory working hours for team members remained at 45 hours per week.

According to the CPA Journal, one of the main reasons accountants leave the public accounting profession is a lack of work/life balance, with many firms requiring their team members to work as many as 60 to 70 hours per week during tax season. While this may be the norm, RHN believes strongly in making our team’s ability to achieve balance a priority.

Here’s why:

Prioritizing Well-being Leads to Greater Productivity

Contrary to the belief that longer hours equate to increased productivity, research has shown that overworking actually diminishes performance and efficiency (see, for example, this summary of the topic by the Harvard Business Review). By limiting mandatory hours and encouraging our team members to prioritize their well-being, we’re fostering a work environment where individuals can operate at their best. When employees feel rested, rejuvenated, and supported in maintaining a healthy work-life balance, they’re better equipped to tackle challenges with clarity and focus. This, in turn, leads to higher-quality work and ultimately benefits both our clients and our firm.

Building and Retaining a Superstar Team

In an industry plagued by high turnover rates, retaining top talent is paramount to sustaining growth and delivering exceptional client service. By championing a culture that respects work-life balance, we not only cultivate loyalty among our existing team members but also attract new talent seeking a progressive and supportive workplace. We know that potential hires are increasingly prioritizing firms that value their personal well-being, and we want to show up-and-coming accountants that work/life balance is more than a talking point.

Enhancing Client Relationships

At the heart of our business are the relationships we’ve built with our clients. By empowering our team to achieve balance in their lives, we’re better positioned to serve our clients with the utmost dedication and professionalism. Our team members are more engaged, attentive, and responsive when they feel fulfilled both personally and professionally. This translates into stronger client relationships, as we’re able to provide the high level of service and attention to detail that sets us apart in the industry.

Love Your Job, Live Your Life

We firmly believe that success is not measured solely by the number of hours worked but by the impact we make and the lives we touch. By prioritizing the well-being of our team members and embracing a culture of balance, we’re not only redefining tax season but also setting a new standard for excellence in our industry.

If our values align with your goals, we’d love to chat. We are always looking for exceptional talent, from co-op students to juniors to intermediate or senior accountants looking for a change.
